# Study of basic geometry shapes

As we know, geometry is the branch of maths that deals with various shapes, their size and some rules that briefly formulate them. It is divided in two types as plane geometry and solid geometry. Plane geometry deals with the two dimensional shapes while solid geometry is all about the three dimensional shapes. Lets study the basics of geometry in detail.

## Use of exponentiation in math:

The basic geometry shapes includes a point, line-segment, triangle, several polygons, circle, parabola, eclipse and many more. We will have basic geometry help on some of this shapes and learn basic geometry definitions along with the properties like areas, volume, circumference etc.

### Basic geometry definitions for some shapes:

Lets see the definitions of basic geometry terms to understand them in a better way.

• A point can be considered some location anywhere in space and is represented by dot.

• A line can be considered as collection of infinite number of points joined straightly together. A line-segment can be considered as certain part of a line.

• A triangle is made up of three line-segments whose end-points touch each other and form a closed surface.

• Polygons consists of n number of sides forming a closed loop.

• A circle is a shape that is totally round. Given a center point, all the points of circle are equidistant from that point.

### Understanding basic geometry rules:

• A point could have 2 co-ordinates or three depending on the dimensions.

• A triangle has three angles whose sum equals 180 degrees.

• Polygons can be divided into several triangles and thereby the sum of angles is calculated.

• The radius of circle can be used to find its circumference.

A lot more basic geometry rules can be written regarding each shapes. This would in turn help a lot to solve basic geometry problems.

### Solving basic geometry problems:

The basic geometry and its problems will guide you a lot on all the geometric topics. Lets see couple of them.

(1) What is a ray?

A ray is a line that extends only in one direction i.e. it is limited on one end. It can be considered as combination of line and line-segment.

(2) What is the sum of all angles of a polygon?

A polygon with 4 sides better known as rectangle, can be divided into 2 triangles. Similarly that with 5 sides can be divided into 3 triangles. Generalizing this, we have (n-2) triangles in a n-sided polygon. Hence sum of all angles of a polygon will be (n – 2) x 180 degrees.
