Order of Operations Definition
Let's look at order of operations definiton
About order of operations , Math says
A set of rules that define which operation is to be performed prior to the other operation in a given expression having more than one operators.
Studying Math order of operations , we encounter multiplication , addition , subtraction etc . These all are operations while symbols like ‘*’ , ‘+’, ‘-‘ are referred as operators.
There are following rules for order of operations in Maths.
Moving in an expression from left to right
1. First solve the operations that lie in parenthesis
2. Perform , any radical or exponent operations before multiplication and division
3.Perform all multiplication and division operations before addition and subtraction operations
Use the term PEMDAS to learn the exact left-to–right order of operation quickly where
P – Parenthesis ( First Preference)
E- Exponent (Second Preference)
M-Multiplication or D- Division (Third Preference)
A-Addition or S-Subtraction (Fourth Preference)
ORDER OF OPERATIONS PROBLEMS
We will have a better understanding of mathematical order of operations by order of operations examples
Evaluate the given expression having two operations
We will perform Multiplication first and then addition ( 3rd Rule)
Evaluate the given expression having more than two operations
1.We will perform Multiplication first ( 3rd Rule)
2.Now , we will perform addition and subtraction operations
Evaluate the given expression
7(2+ 32 -6 /2)
1.We will first solve the operations in parenthesis ( 1st Rule) and there we will go for exponent first (2nd Rule)
2.Then , we will perform the division operation before addition or subtraction (3rd Rule)
3.After this , we will perform addition and subtraction
4.In last , we will perform the multiplication operation outside parenthesis
ALGEBRA AND PROGRAMMING
Order of Math operations is also quite important in algebra order of operations and many programming languages. In C, order of operations like multiplication , addition , subtraction etc has the same precedence level as is in Maths.
